Christmas Lights

Christmas lights...

Christmas lights are strands of electric lights that are used for decorating Christmas trees, homes and buildings. Usually used for decoration during the Christmas season, these are also called as twinkle lights or fairy lights. Along with ornaments and other decoration materials these lights add to the look and grace of the Christmas tree. Christmas lights are available in different colours and varying arrangements. Christmas lights are even used for lighting and decorating both the indoors and outdoors of the house . External lighting is usually in a vertical fashion where the strands are released from the top of the house or a building.

Enlighted Past...

The first Christmas tree to be electrically illuminated was created by Edward Johnson, an associate of Thomas Edison. He specially made Christmas tree bulbs for himself while he was the vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company. His Christmas tree was a hand wired tree with about 80 incandescent light bulbs of 3 different colours; red, blue, and white and the size of a walnut.

These Christmas lights were highly priced then and were not affordable to the common people. So majority of the houses still used candles for lighting their houses and Christmas trees. Only the rich and the big businesses could afford it. This was the trend till 1930, then as the prices went down Electric Christmas lights entered almost every house.

The first commercially produced lamps for Christmas trees were produced in strings of eight sockets or in multiples of eight. These were manufactured by the General Electric Co. of New Jersey. A two candela miniature carbon filament lamp was fitted in each socket.

Bright present...

Today, many different technologies are used for lighting devices that are used during Christmas. The most common ones are LEDs and incandescent light bulbs. These are powered from the mains without a transformer and are usually connected in series. Neon strings with parallel connected lamps are also used.
Some Christmas light sets even use the technology of fiber optics for illumination. These are usually used with artificial Christmas trees.

Different forms of lightings are used. Some prefer it as individual bulbs, while some prefer light ropes and some as Christmas light strings.

Some of the famous Christmas lights are battery operated lights, C7, C9 strings and bulbs, bubble lights, fiber optics, mini lights, icicle lights and rope lights.
